Designed by a pupil of the famous architect Sinan in the 17th century, it was originally called Sultanahmet, from which the area takes its name.
Hippodrome was the centre of sporting and social events during the Byzantıne Empire. The Serpentine Column, The Obelisk of Theodosius and The German Fountain are notable monuments decorating the arena.

Süleymaniye Mosque is an important historical symbol for Turks because it represents the height of Ottoman art and our most powerful political era.
