Ayasofya (Hagıa Sophia) is one the greatest masterpieces of Byzantine architecture, built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. Converted into a mosque in 1453 by Conqueror Mehmet, it is now one of the world's great museums. Its massive dome still dominates the skyline of old İstanbul.

Blue Mosque is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. It takes its name from the exquisite İznik tiles that decorate the interior, and it is the only imperial mosque with six minarets. Designed by a pupil of the famous architect Sinan in the 17th century, it was originally called Sultanahmet, from which the area takes its name.

Hippodrome was the centre of sporting and social events during the Byzantıne Empire. The Serpentine Column, The Obelisk of Theodosius and The German Fountain are notable monuments decorating the arena.

Grand Bazaar is the oldest and largest shopping centre in turkey, situated in the centre of the old city. It has 4,000 shops full of treasures, including carpets, leather, icons, ceramics and jewellery.

Topkapı Palace was the principal residence of the Ottoman Sultans for nearly 400 years. It is now a museum and houses a fabulous collection of crystal, silver, Chinese porcelain, jewels and costumes. The armoury  and royal harem are particularly worth seeing.

Süleymaniye Mosque was built by Sinan for Süleyman the Magnificent. Sinan was the greatest architect of his day and the originator of the classical Ottoman style. Süleymaniye Mosque is an important historical symbol for Turks because it represents the height of Ottoman art and our most powerful political era.
