The design of this magnificent building, with its vast dome, is a synthesis of the Occident and the Orient. It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, until Constantinople fell to Sultan Mehmet 11 in 1453, and for the next 481 years ıt was used as a mosque. It has been a museum since 1935. Blue Mosque, one of the most famous monuments of the Turkish and Islamic world, is the only mosque with six minarets. It was originally called Sultan Ahmet Mosque, from which the area takes its name, but it is also known as the Blue Mosque because of the gorgeous blue glazed tiles decorating its interior . The mosque, built between 1609 and 1616, was located in a large complex that included social and cultural structures . Hippodrome, the scene of ancient chariot races and sporting events, contains four monuments: the German Fountain of Wilhelm II, the Obelisk of Theodosius, the bronze Serpentine Column and the Column of Constantine. Topkapı Palace was not built and completed according to a specific plan. Construction started around 1459 for Sultan Mehmet II, after which it grew and changed like a living organism. The palace was the home of the Sultans for almost four centuries, until the reign of Abdulmecid I (1839-1860). In 1924 it was turned into a museum. Important collections include the armoury, where the jewel encrusted Topkapı dagger can be seen, the Spoonmakers Diamond, miniatures and manuscripts, fıne porcelains, sacred objects and the Sultan's wardrobe with its wonderful ceremonial and informal costumes. Lunch at a local restaurant, which serves delicious Anatolian food. Suleymaniye Mosque crowns one of the seven hills dominating the Golden Horn and provides a magnificent landmark for the entire city. It was commissioned by the greatest, richest and most powerful of the Ottoman sultans, Suleyman the Magnificent (1520-1566 ) and was the fourth imperial mosque in Istanbul. The great architect Sinan built it between 1550 and 1557 and his only wish was to surpass the builder of Ayasofya . It has four minarets rising from each corner of the courtyard .
